The Global Enterprise Architect Community Summit 2024 will take place online on 18 and 19 September 2024 and will feature presentations and discussions on a variety of topics related to Enterprise Architect, Prolaborate and Software as a Service. Philipp Kalenda and Daniel Siegl from LieberLieber will be giving a talk on “Model Evolution in Time and Space – Model versioning and variant management unified for sustainable Product Line Engineering”on 18th of September (15:30 – 16:30 CET). Overall, versioning and variant handling are indispensable in the engineering of complex systems in order to ensure quality, efficiency and traceability and to effectively overcome the challenges of complexity and diversity. While “Version Control” is essential for the long-term maintenance and evolution of a system (Time), “Variant Handling” allows existing versions of a system to be further developed or updated without compromising the integrity of other variants (Space).

However, in practice, it has often been shown that you either introduce a good versioning concept or try to manage variants. Berger et.al. stated in Dagstuhl reports 2019 that the software configuration community regularly faces the need to support variants, while Software Product Line Engineering needs versioning support. They claimed that neither community has been successful in producing unified version and variant management techniques that are effective in practice.

Now 5 years later, LieberLieber together with Pure Systems by PTC showcase an unified approach by connecting Feature modeling and feature-branch based MBSE for tackling variant management in a Enterprise Architect model. Pure::variants transforms this complete systems model into variant models, which are then managed in git using LemonTree.

In this tutorial, we will demonstrate how a systems model can be described with the 150% approach using pure::variants constraints. A variant transformation then generates 100% models, which are the basis for feature branches managed by git. With the established approach of change management and pull requests the model is maintained in variant-feature branches (Time) while the further transformations can be executed to manage changes in the variant configuration (Space) or work with sub-variants.

Philipp Kalenda presented a comprehensive scenario at Mesconf in his one-hour talk “Requirements & Architecture: Managing Traces in a model-based Build Pipeline” including the recently introduced LemonTree family (see graphic). The interest was very high and there were so many specific questions from the audience that the live demo conducted did not quite reach its end. We are very pleased to have shown obviously interesting approaches to current problems and are therefore very happy to make the presentation available.
Abstract: Only through relations and links a model becomes intelligent. Through these references it is possible to analyze the model, to validate it or to extract information (like reports, code generation, etc.). Since requirements often originate from ALM tools, integration is used to establish a relationship between requirements and architectural elements. With LemonTree Automation and our LemonTree.Connect integrations, we at LieberLieber offer a way to automatically synchronize links between requirements and architecture in a build pipeline and thus keep them consistent.

The presentation was first dedicated to the explanation of LieberLieber ALM integrations and the principle of “one leading system for data”. Then it was explained how models in a build pipeline can be automatically checked and made available for reviews. Finally, Philipp Kalenda showed in a live demo how the links between requirements and model are kept consistent and up-to-date via the build pipeline.

This state-of-the-art integration is based on the latest technology and brings important updates for users of both systems.

Siemens, developer of the market-leading Polarion Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solution and LieberLieber Software, specialist for the widely used modelling platform Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect, establish with this step their partnership around Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). The now published integration enables users to synchronise requirements, model attributes as well as links and references between Polarion ALM and Enterprise Architect. This makes it even easier to navigate back and forth between the two platforms while development data is automatically synchronised.
Overall, the new Polarion ALM – Enterprise Architect integration closes the loop between requirements and model artefacts in an MBSE environment. For end-product developers with complex systems engineering processes, the software integration provides traceability, transparency and increased speed of delivery.

References between requirements are available in Enterprise Architect, while connections between requirements and architecture are represented in Polarion. This allows users to easily monitor and manage complex product delivery processes, even in regulated industries.

In this second webinar from LieberLieber and Parallel Agile, we’ll be discussing the management of Enterprise Architect (EA) models, and you will travel with us to the Bahamas! We’ll show you how LemonTree and Parallel Agile`s CodeBot can be used to create full stack web applications from EA models.

The real power of CodeBot-driven UX development is the ability to create new versions of an application in minutes, so that clients can provide immediate feedback to the developers – a highly agile approach, but with all the rigor of UML modeling. With CodeBot, the model is the code, and LemonTree is essential to manage it.

Short iterations are key to developing a refined and client-tested user interface (and associated database). The Parallel Agile process allows each use case to be developed by an independent developer; this produces fast results but also produces countless model/code variants, so version management with LemonTree is essential.

As a practical example we have chosen a Location Based Advertising (LBA) system for the Bahamas. This is a voucher delivery system that allows advertisers to register for an account, log in and publish vouchers to be delivered when the customer enters a specific geographic area (geofence). These vouchers are received by the LBA mobile app, which is also connected to the hosted API.

The development of cyber-physical systems, especially in the automotive industry, is evolving and this trend is now seen across many diverse product markets. E-Mobility, automated or autonomous driving, innovative and highly networked IoT technologies are leading to ever increasing system complexity that is multiplied due to the need for safety standards compliance.

In order to meet this challenge, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is increasingly used in different application areas. Although the approach has struggled in the past with the ROI argument, the benefits of MBSE are now clear in regard of the increase in the complexity of systems, as well as through work in distributed teams across company boundaries.

Thus, SDC Systems and LieberLieber Software present why Model-based Systems Engineering has been introduced at major European and U.S. corporations to define state-of-the-art safety critical cyber-physical products. In addition, we will show technologies, tools and capabilities needed to successfully overcome the challenges.

In the live demo we will showcase the following tool chain:

Enterprise Architect for modeling and traceability

Integration with codebeamer for requirements management

LemonTree with Git for versioning models

During a product development cycle the different models go through various iterations of changes and releases. Apart from baselining and variant management, configuration management enables product releases, analyses of design as well as further development happening all at the same time with different configurations. For these purposes, the advantages of versioning systems have been successfully used for decades in the development of the source code.
