We are pleased to present LemonTree 4.1 with interesting new features!

In order to reach the Linux community, a preview version for LemonTree Desktop is now available for the first time. This means that Linux users can also perform a Diff&Merge with LemonTree without having to leave their familiar operating system. In this first step, we are primarily interested in collecting feedback from users in order to bring the Linux version even closer to practical requirements. So please only use this version for testing and not for production. We look forward to your feedback: https://www.lieberlieber.com/lemontree/en/#Contact

For all fans of dark mode, this can now be easily set in the settings. You can now work in dark mode and compare and merge your models in a familiar atmosphere.

In the improved Context Menu, actions for elements in LemonTree can now be easily selected by right-clicking. This makes it even easier and quicker to carry out your frequently used activities and enjoy the greater convenience of LemonTree.

The review status can now be set as “reviewed” via the context menu, the checkbox in the treeview or the checkbox in the model browser. The result of the review is displayed graphically as a status bar in front of the element, giving you a quick overview.

Here is an overview of the main new features in LemonTree 4.1:

LemonTree Web License Changes (Using LemonTree Desktop Licenses per User)

LemonTree Desktop Linux Preview Version

With version 4.0, the LemonTree family now has a completely new user interface as well as innovations for web-based reviews and continuous integration. The new user interface has been optimised for user friendliness and feedback and offers a 4K resolution for even better image sharpness.

Vienna – Shortly after the introduction of the LemonTree family (Desktop, Web, Automation, Components, Connect), version 4.0 provides a user interface based on the latest technology with 4K resolution and a special focus on user friendliness and user feedback (Figure 1). The only exceptions are the LemonTree.Connect products (Codebeamer, Polarion), which are kept up-to-date in a separate release cycle.

The LemonTree Addin for Enterprise Architect also gets a new interface to improve the user experience for model versioning and the management of LemonTree Components. The possibility to switch directly between the different addin menus avoids unnecessary loading times and improves performance considerably (Figure 2).

Dr. Konrad Wieland, CEO of LieberLieber: “With the release 4.0, our development team has succeeded in providing the products with a new user interface that is even more appealing and intuitive and involves the users more. Furthermore, models can be better integrated into a continuous integration process, as features for web-based reviews, diagram export and XML reports have been implemented. Once again we own that we are constantly adapting LemonTree to the growing expectations of our target group and also always keep an eye on ease of use.”

The modernisation is reflected not least in the new example model “Power Window Controller”, which is executed with SysML. This current example model is supplied with the new version, incidentally also as an Enterprise Architect 16 SQLite project.

Features for better clarity

LemonTree 4.0 offers the possibility to set a “Custom Root”, whereby only certain Enterprise Architect packages are displayed in a LemonTree session. This allows for more focused merge reviews by hiding other model areas (Figure 3).

Since LemonTree calculates the difference of Enterprise Architect models on database level, it often detects differences that are not directly associated with changes. Therefore, it was a frequently mentioned customer request to improve the clarity here. Using the new function “Noise Reduction”, the display of LemonTree can now be reduced to essential changes in order to get a clear overview more easily (Figure 4).

In order to better perform evaluations of changes to the Enterprise Architect model, the model changes of diff/merge processes calculated by LemonTree can now be exported as an XML report. This XML report is created by LemonTree Automation and can be used as a review artefact in order to carry out reviews, e.g. on a build server, in a more targeted and automated manner.

Models better integrated into the continuous integration process

In order to better integrate models into a continuous integration process, features for web-based reviews, diagram export and XML reports were implemented with LemonTree.Automation 4.0 and LemonTree.Web 4.0. With these features it is possible for the first time to integrate LemonTree into the pull / merge request workflow and to edit models in the same schema as source code. In order to be able to use LemonTree more easily on build servers, a Docker image for Linux is now also available.

Reviews easier to carry out

For a more comfortable execution of model reviews, LemonTree.Automation offers an additional diagram export function. With this, diagrams can be exported as SVG, e.g. to attach them to a GitHub comment (Figure 5).

Furthermore, LemonTree.Web was enabled to open LemonTree session files. Thus, diff or merge sessions created with LemonTree.Automation can be reviewed via LemonTree.Web.

Philipp Kalenda presented a comprehensive scenario at Mesconf in his one-hour talk “Requirements & Architecture: Managing Traces in a model-based Build Pipeline” including the recently introduced LemonTree family (see graphic). The interest was very high and there were so many specific questions from the audience that the live demo conducted did not quite reach its end. We are very pleased to have shown obviously interesting approaches to current problems and are therefore very happy to make the presentation available.
Abstract: Only through relations and links a model becomes intelligent. Through these references it is possible to analyze the model, to validate it or to extract information (like reports, code generation, etc.). Since requirements often originate from ALM tools, integration is used to establish a relationship between requirements and architectural elements. With LemonTree Automation and our LemonTree.Connect integrations, we at LieberLieber offer a way to automatically synchronize links between requirements and architecture in a build pipeline and thus keep them consistent.

The presentation was first dedicated to the explanation of LieberLieber ALM integrations and the principle of “one leading system for data”. Then it was explained how models in a build pipeline can be automatically checked and made available for reviews. Finally, Philipp Kalenda showed in a live demo how the links between requirements and model are kept consistent and up-to-date via the build pipeline.

LieberLieber launched its product LemonTree more than six years ago. As the demand expanded more and more, LemonTree has become a product family in the meantime. An important part of this is the LemonTree.Connect product group, which connects various ALM systems with Enterprise Architect. It currently consists of two connectors and could grow to three by the end of the year.

Vienna – The most important function of LemonTree when it was introduced was the comparison and merging of different model versions. The 3-way comparison algorithm used for this takes into account the graph structure of the models and thus allows an accurate comparison between two versions. The complete modernisation of the data access layer then created a new technical core for LemonTree that enables today’s developments.

Meanwhile, the LemonTree family consists of the following products:

LemonTree.Desktop: Diff/Merge functions

LemonTree.Web: Functionality like LemonTree.Desktop, available as web application via browser

LemonTree.Automation: use in the context of a build server pipeline (without GUI)

LemonTree.Components: Allows the division of a model created with Enterprise Architect into different sub-models or components.

LemonTree.Connect: Synchronisation of ALM tools (Codebeamer, Polarion) and Enterprise Architect

Dr. Konrad Wieland, CEO of LieberLieber: “We are very pleased about the great demand for LemonTree. Since our product now allows for different application scenarios, we have decided to expand LemonTree into a product family. Our modern data access layer allows us to offer a wide range of variations with the highest performance. This allows us to meet the wishes of our customers and to further facilitate and deepen the handling of models. In doing so, we see ourselves as a partner of the industry, which today faces challenges that have not existed before, not only regarding complexity.”

Manage models over their entire life cycle

The LemonTree.Connect product group connects ALM systems with Enterprise Architect and at the moment consists of two connectors (codebeamer, Polarion).

Currently, LemonTree 3.3.1, LemonTree.Connect codebeamer 2.6.0 and LemonTree.Connect Polarion 1.2.0 are available. Both connectors belong to the LemonTree product family as they are based on the same technology. During import and export, a comparison is made and the difference is calculated so that only this is transferred during synchronisation to improve performance. The main focus of both integrations is the exchange of traceability information (references) between the two worlds of ALM and Enterprise Architect (UML/SysML).

Tools for application lifecycle management (ALM) support the entire lifecycle of software from design to maintenance. They quickly and clearly show which requirements have already been taken into account in the software. By connecting to the Enterprise Architect modelling platform, system architects and engineers can create accurate models based on the requirements. At the same time, it is ensured that these requirements are covered by the models and that the effects of changes to requirements can be easily determined. Wieland: “Modern development processes are driven by more and more data, which is often maintained in different systems. Therefore, it was clear to us that we should build a powerful link between the modelling world and requirements management. This opens up the benefits of both worlds to users, allowing them to manage growing complexity while maintaining a high level of flexibility.” LemonTree.Connect basically works as a connector even without a LemonTree licence. However, if the LemonTree functions are activated, then many additional possibilities arise that make the daily work with the models much easier.

LemonTree.Connect closes the loop between requirements and model artefacts in an MBSE environment. This enables users to easily monitor and manage complex product development processes, even in highly regulated industries.

Model parts for the supply chain

In many sectors, such as the automotive industry, the companies involved in the product development process today often see themselves as elements of networked supply chains that continue to become more and more complex. Therefore, a product like LemonTree, which is used at a very central point of model-based development, must also meet these requirements. With LemonTree.Components it is possible to detach model parts or components from a model and make them available to suppliers for further development. Once external development is complete, the component can be easily reintegrated into the model. Conversely, developers at suppliers or from other internal departments can import predefined model packages into Enterprise Architect for further development. In addition, model parts can be defined as “read-only” so that a supplier can use these parts but not modify them.

Connecting LemonTree.Components with LemonTree.Automation

In order to operate lifecycle management for parts or individual components of a model created with Enterprise Architect, the model must be split up. The resulting sub-models can then be maintained individually. LemonTree.Components makes it possible to specify parts of an Enterprise Architect model as reusable components and to separate them from the model. These components can then be edited as an independent model, versioned and reloaded into the overall model.

LemonTree components are extracted from the model via export and imported into another model via import. This restricts distributed editing to specific parts of the model. With LemonTree, differences in the edited components are quickly recognised and visualised. After adjusting the component in a so-called working model, the changes are integrated back into the original overall model.

Depending on the working method, the overall model is regularly updated and a new revision of the components is imported. This task is taken over by LemonTree Automation, integrated in a build server pipeline. In this way, models are integrated into familiar processes and changes remain visible and testable.

An example workflow for this procedure was recently presented in the white paper: “LemonTree Automation – How to work successfully with LemonTree Components in a build pipeline using version control” (see info box).

Whitepaper: LemonTree Automation

The workflow presented in the new whitepaper “LemonTree Automation – How to work successfully with LemonTree Components in a build pipeline using version control” shows one way to work with LemonTree.Components and LemonTree.Automation in the context of a build pipeline. By exploiting all the possibilities of the tools, an extensive tool chain is created, which can be realised in different stages of expansion depending on the requirements.

In principle, Enterprise Architect models can be managed in version control systems and thus used in a build pipeline. One problem, however, is that under certain circumstances a monolithic overall model is versioned that consists of different, independent components. To solve this problem, the model is split into LemonTree Components and each component is managed in its own version control repository (called Git Repository in this example).

LieberLieber and IncQuery have a long-standing partnership in the area of model-based development with Enterprise Architect and LemonTree. This collaboration has now resulted in the AUTOSAR-UML Bridge by IncQuery, a powerful solution for bridging the gap between AUTOSAR and UML. It enables developers to streamline the development process and improve the overall efficiency of system design.

The IncQuery AUTOSAR-UML Bridge is tightly integrated with LemonTree. This integration allows automotive systems or software engineers to use LemonTree’s capabilities to easily track AUTOSAR changes by re-importing and securely merging them into the Enterprise Architect UML project. This way, UML stakeholders can stay on the same page for each project iteration without wasting time on manual reviews and data entry.

This white paper describes how to integrate LemonTree.Components and LemonTree.Automation into a DevOps process to efficiently manage the lifecycle of partial models.

In order to operate lifecycle management for parts of the model or individual components, the model must be split up. The resulting sub-models can then be maintained individually. LemonTree.Components makes it possible to specify parts of an Enterprise Architect model as reusable components and to separate them from the model. These components can then be edited as an independent model, versioned and fed back into the overall model.

Depending on the working method, the overall model is regularly updated and a new revision of the components is imported. This task is performed by LemonTree.Automation, integrated in a build server pipeline. In this way, models are integrated into familiar processes and changes remain visible and testable.

Vienna/Gauting-Stockdorf – For Christoph Hinrichs, Global Process Expert “Requirements Engineering, Systems Engineering, MBSE” at Webasto, the future of development clearly lies in MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering): “At Webasto, we started dealing with MBSE about two years ago in order to better meet the challenges of our complex development projects. Before that, we only had isolated solutions with various modelling tools and Enterprise Architect, which did not produce the desired results. Now we were able to show, among other things, in a pilot project in our Business Unit Batteries, which possibilities MBSE opens up for the company. We were very well supported by LieberLieber and are also extremely satisfied with the support around Enterprise Architect and LemonTree.” Hinrichs therefore presented his experiences at the first MBSE Summit in June 2022 in Traunkirchen, Upper Austria, and received a lot of attention from the MBSE community. The summit was organised by LieberLieber and the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz and will take place again in 2023 from 5 to 6 June.

Clear MBSE strategy and thorough testing of the tools

Webasto did not want to leave anything to chance when entering MBSE. Therefore, a clearly structured modelling process was defined (MBSE Meta-Model), the language to be used was defined (SysML) and the appropriate tool was selected in a very elaborate back-to-back comparison. “We were not satisfied with our previous solution and in a very open and selective tool comparison, Enterprise Architect clearly convinced us with the best cost-benefit ratio,” Hinrichs describes. The continuous responsiveness of the LieberLieber team with regard to open questions also left a very positive impression: “Since we always want to have the latest tools in use, we quickly switched to Enterprise Architect 16. LieberLieber supported us very well in this and also updated LemonTree promptly so that we could continue to use the whole tool chain.” In the end, LieberLieber’s recommendations regarding the tool chain were adopted, but Git was replaced by IBM RTC.

Dr Konrad Wieland, Managing Director of LieberLieber, comments: “We are very pleased that Webasto has chosen the path towards MBSE together with us. Christoph Hinrichs is approaching this major task in a very clearly structured way and gave us interesting insights into his pioneering work at the MBSE Summit 2022. We are united by the common goal of communicating the benefits and advantages of MBSE in a comprehensible and practice-oriented way and thus successfully convincing people. In this way, we are creating a good and robust basis for the continued economic success of the outstanding family-owned company Webasto!”

Communicating the benefits of MBSE throughout the company

For Hinrichs, it is clear that the greatest benefit of MBSE only comes when the process has been rolled out throughout the company and is working. This is confirmed by scientific studies and practical experience alike. “As usual, we first launched pilot projects to show what is possible with MBSE and what benefits arise from it. The experience gained is then processed – as in the Business Unit Batteries Department – and shared with the business units. Now we have to scale these experiences and anchor them in the business sections. For this, however, we still have to do a lot of convincing with the support of LieberLieber,” explains Hinrichs.

The most important advantages of MBSE were defined as:

Transparency – recognition of dependencies, Defined starting point for cooperation.

Traceability

Visualisation – common language and the appropriate tool for each case

Reusability and automation – Multiple use of artefacts and models; Automated consistency check of models

Quality – Higher product maturity through semi-automated validation; Fewer errors

Processes – Standardised processes facilitate collaboration; Certifications more quickly attainable

“The faster we integrate these points in the company, the more benefits we can derive from MBSE,” Hinrichs knows. However, it is important not to take any hasty steps, but to first check exactly what the current situation is in a department. Based on this, MBSE can be introduced in a well-controlled process without losing the necessary participation of all those involved by overtaxing them.

In order to make the introduction of MBSE in other departments as smooth as possible, Hinrichs is developing an ever more detailed maturity model. Currently, there are very few publications and contributions that attempt to support the introduction of MBSE in a systematic and structured way, such as the work of Andreas Vogelsang. “There are studies on the collection of MBSE maturity levels, but no one talks about what effort it takes to reach a level or what benefits can be achieved with a level. In the practical test, for example, we found that the levels have to be as small and solution-oriented as possible so as not to trigger excessive demands, otherwise we would lose interest in MBSE or even meet with resistance. If we want to change something in the processes, methods or tools, we need a team that sticks together and pursues a common goal,” Hinrichs explains.

Key user as communicator for MBSE

As a central point of contact, a “key user” should be found in each department who is available as a multiplier and communicator for MBSE. The fundamental basis for scaling MBSE is the tool setup adapted to the needs as well as the configuration management. Hinrichs supports and disseminates MBSE within the company through internal training. This should help generate enthusiasm for the MBSE initiative at Webasto, establish initial contact and build up a network. If detailed expert knowledge is then required, or if the key user team encounters challenges in the tool, LieberLieber is available for this at any time. “Currently, three pilot projects are running in parallel, one of which is also already at a next higher level in the maturity model. So we are working intensively on establishing and scaling MBSE in the company. There is still a lot of work ahead of us and it is reassuring to know that we can always call in the experts from LieberLieber to solve difficult questions together if necessary,” explains Hinrichs.

The team, which currently consists of seven people, specializes in consulting and training in the field of modelling and Do178 certification. Having worked in this field for almost 30 years, they know the Israeli modelling market very well. Enterprise Architect is widely used in the country, but mostly only for lightweight and not for full scale system modelling. ACTL wants to change this with the support of LieberLieber and has already won its first customer for LemonTree.

Vienna/Jerusalem – Dani Mannes, Co-Founder & Chief Architect of ACTL, is absolutely convinced of modelling and the Enterprise Architect Platform: “The Software/Systems Engineering industry knows each other very well and modelling is currently only a niche market in Israel. Mostly, modelling is not yet used as an end-to-end solution, but only selectively. However, since we are absolutely convinced of the possibilities of modelling, we were very happy to get to know LieberLieber. Their product LemonTree provides for the first time a convincing solution for version management, which significantly facilitates modelling in agile and distributed groups in particular!” ACTL Systems in one of the leading Israeli companies in the field of software development methodology. The team, which currently numbers seven, specializes in consulting and training in the field of SW and systems modelling and also has extensive experience in supporting DO178 (Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification) certification.

Dr. Konrad Wieland, CEO of LieberLieber Software: “We are very pleased to have found ACTL Systems as a partner in this new market, a specialist who has been involved in modelling for decades. We are very optimistic that with LemonTree we have a key in our hands to open up the market and to deepen modelling in Israeli companies. We are specifically counting on the wide distribution of Enterprise Architect and the excellence and experience of our partner ACTL.”

The architecture is a model expressed with UML/SysML

In Mannes’s experience, agile development teams often focus on sprint-based delivery of user stories and the related working code. Conventional teams, on the other hand, often start development with an intensive architecture and design phase. For him, this raises the question: do architecture and design belong to the past or can architecture modelling and agile work be combined?

According to Mannes, many of ACTL’s clients in the defense industry are used to waterfall-based processes. This is often driven by contractual constraints and the perceived need for systems engineers to mitigate risk and manage development at scale through a pre-designed system architecture. However, he says, the reality is that the architecture and blueprints often change when implementation begins, making the architecture and blueprint outdated. Because of these changes, documents such as the System Subsystem Specification (SSS), System Subsystem Design Document (SSDD), Software Requirements Specification (SRS) and the Software Design Document (SDD) have to be rewritten or updated several times to reflect the actual requirements and design. But how can this effort be avoided?

The answer is quite simply, according to Mannes: by seeing architecture as a model expressed with UML/SysML. For him, architecture is a simplified description of both the static and dynamic aspects of the system. It is used for communication in the team, for discussion and as a reference when extending the system. Mannes: “If you want to talk about architecture, what does architecture look like? Well, our answer is that the architecture is a model expressed using UML/SysML. The model also serves as the knowledge base from which the required documents can be generated. And with Lemon Tree the model can be version managed along with the contractually required documents.”

But the model is only a means of communication and not a goal or end in itself. Therefore, he says, the model does not have to describe the complete solution, but only the necessary aspects for:

Discussion of the current large-scale structure and mechanisms

Assessing the impact of current decisions

Ensuring that the different parts of the system are clearly separated and their interfaces well defined, and that the parts together contribute to the current scope of system functionality

LemonTree: The ideal solution for modelling in distributed and agile teams

Recently, LieberLieber and ACTL jointly held a first webinar, which was very well received. “LemonTree is fundamentally easy to market: Once you’ve seen it in action, you want it,” Mannes is convinced. For him, LemonTree can be compared to Beyond Compare: One tool compares files and folders, the other just versions of a model. “Both tools are incomparable in their domain and offer the highest benefit and comfort for the user. The only thing LemonTree lacks in Israel is awareness, which we now want to rapidly expand as a LieberLieber partner.”

Nevertheless, one must realize that the concrete implementation steps for entering version management with LemonTree are not so simple: “For this, active steps are unavoidable, because new work processes have to be defined and introduced.” Therefore, it is necessary to support the person in an interested company who is convinced of the advantages of LemonTree and is committed to it. Therefore one of the key tasks for the two companies, he says, is to clearly communicate the benefits of model-based systems engineering (MBSE). “Enterprise Architect users want to be personally addressed and convinced. We have to tell success stories and communicate the effort and benefits of modelling in a very targeted way.”

In its two training courses (UML and MBSE/SysML), ACTL primarily teaches methods and processes. Only if the use of tools is explicitly desired, the training is extended accordingly. “We want to slowly introduce interested parties to the topic of modelling and show them where modelling will bring them the most benefits. In this way, we create the basic prerequisites that can then be implemented with tools such as Enterprise Architect and LemonTree.”

In MBSE, ACTL currently has two major projects, one of which relies on Enterprise Architect and where LemonTree would also fit in well. “The international INCOSE association is very active in Israel on MBSE.
Vienna/Dissen, 28. September 2022 –In the future, there will also be an increased focus on digitalisation in agriculture, which is associated with specific requirements for the machines and systems used in this industry. Within the CLAAS Group, CLAAS E-Systems is responsible for the development of electrical and electronic systems for agricultural machinery. Enterprise Architect has been used there for many years as the standard editor for modelling SysML and UML models. Now, LemonTree has also been added to the engineering tool chain. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Theodor Jäger, Systems Engineering Coach at CLAAS E-Systems in Dissen, Lower Saxony, comments: “The tractor cab of the future will be much more strongly characterised by software than it is today. We have to adapt to this and find ways to deal with increasing system complexity efficiently and effectively. In the course of these changes, document-centred systems development is reaching its limits; it is no longer up to date and is taking a back seat. For us, there is no other viable alternative than the transition to model-based systems engineering (MBSE). At the end of this transformation, the system model takes centre stage, whereby models are the key repository for information (‘single source of truth‘), from which views of the model are generated, such as in the form of documents. The importance of SysML, UML and other models for system development thus takes on a completely new level of significance. Enterprise Architect as a modelling platform and LemonTree as an enabler for current versioning of the models are crucial to achieving this goal.”

Making Systems Engineering easier

When Jäger joined CLAAS E-Systems about two and a half years ago, he brought with him more than 20 years of experience in the development of mechatronic systems. At an automotive supplier in Sauerland, he developed mechatronic systems in international projects in various roles and positions. As a coach for processes, methods and tools, he most recently supported project teams in modelling their systems in SysML. Jäger is particularly concerned with keeping systems engineering simple. In doing so, he heeds the advice of physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman: “If you cannot explain something in simple terms, you don’t understand it.” Jäger translates this with regard to MBSE and explains: “People also need MBSE to be presented and communicated in a way that fits into today’s working environment: Simple, with catchy explanations, concise pictures, in small servings. Hardly anyone reads a ten-page text nowadays. Even if the benefit of an activity is not immediately clear, motivation decreases. Only if it is meaningful and simple, and in the best case also fun, will new methods and processes be accepted in the organisation and also be brought into everyday use beyond locational boundaries.”

Holistic system development with MBSE

“During harvesting, the customer must experience no system malfunctions. Therefore, we must achieve this goal with our MBSE approach: Fewer faults with increasing complexity,” notes Jäger. After all, agricultural machinery must be very reliable, and its unrestricted availability during the harvesting season is a top priority. So, when the complexity of the machines increases, this must not affect their availability, and failures must be avoided at all costs.

In addition to his experience with Enterprise Architect in modelling mechatronic systems, Jäger also brings his expertise with regard to LemonTree to CLAAS. His aspiration is to be able to further develop and maintain models in accordance with their future significance in a secure, process-compliant manner, which is best achieved using the methods and concepts that have already proven themselves in classic software development. “Being able to develop, version and organise software and models with the same methods and tools is the ideal way. This eliminates tool break between the system and software worlds.” In any case, LemonTree was convincing in a proof of concept carried out specifically for this purpose: functions such as comparing, differencing and merging models, dependency analysis or simple versioning were very well received. As a result, LemonTree has become an integral part of the engineering tool chain at CLAAS E-Systems.

The cooperation with LieberLieber is very good, for example because of the fast support offered, a common language and time zone. Last but not least, mutual appreciation and trust. For Jäger, the support behind the tools via support and consulting is essential: “There are always questions that can be better clarified together. That saves time and money, and there is more time for engineering to provide top-class services. LieberLieber also realises individual adaptations quickly. Furthermore, the licence costs are moderate and the users get along very well with the tools.”

Dr Konrad Wieland, CEO of LieberLieber: “We already knew Theodor Jäger from projects in the automotive industry and are very pleased to now be able to support major digitisation projects at CLAAS together with him. Agricultural engineering is also facing major upheavals similar to those in the automotive industry. For example, new and stricter legal norms and standards, especially in the area of safety and security, are an issue in agricultural engineering. But they can be mastered very well with MBSE and our tools. In any case, we will continue to expand our service and support in order to be able to serve CLAAS in the best possible way.

The operator’s cab of an agricultural machine is where all the information comes together and is made available to the operator. All machine activities are initiated from the cab and many are safety-related. The development process for agricultural machinery must therefore comply with ISO 25119, the standard for functional safety in agricultural machinery. However, functional safety only exists if the software does exactly what it was built for. And that is guaranteed by ISO 21434, the standard of cybersecurity for road vehicles. “The modelling of the system architectures with Enterprise Architect and the use of LemonTree for model comparison and model versioning systematically support us in this and thus create an important working basis for meeting these standards,” concludes Jäger.

In addition, LemonTree.Automation, a special solution for use in a tool chain, is now available.

Vienna, 21.06.2022 – In view of the many improvements and technological changes in Enterprise Architect 16, LieberLieber has recently been repeatedly asked by customers whether they can continue to work with LemonTree without any problems when switching to the new version of the modelling platform used by around one million users. Dr. Konrad Wieland, Managing Director of LieberLieber: “It was a matter of course for us to equip LemonTree with all capabilities at the same time as the new version of Enterprise Architect in order to remain fully compatible. This means that there is nothing standing in the way of switching to Enterprise Architect 16, so that our customers can quickly use the extended possibilities of both tools. In addition, we offer LemonTree.Automation, our own solution without a user interface, which runs in automated use on build servers.”

Agility and modelling merged

In the course of the increasingly agile orientation in software development, our customers ask us again and again whether modelling and agility go well together. LieberLieber’s opinion on this is quite clear and has also been proven in various studies: Only with properly applied modelling can agile processes be implemented at all in the face of increasing complexity, if one also wants to document all regulations and requirements in a comprehensible way. The tool chain around Enterprise Architect (LemonTree, Git, etc.) currently has all the prerequisites for realising scenarios such as “continuous integration”, which have been state of the art in classic software development for some time. The goal is to continuously compile, test and merge the software product to be developed. In addition, the status of the development is published regularly: internally a stable development status, externally an official release of the software.

LemonTree.Automation for use in a tool chain

The possibilities shown above are currently unique on the market. With LemonTree.Automation, they become easily accessible to all users and open up completely new possibilities. The version has no user interface, as it is intended for automated use in the tool chain (Pipeline, Continouus Integration, DevOps) on the build server. In this scenario, LemonTree shows when conflicts occur between different versions. The user takes the generated overview directly into his classic LemonTree version and can resolve the conflict there. As a special service for customers, a freely available integration option was presented on Github together with Florian Beer from Bosch Japan. Basically, the respective integration must be determined by the company so that everything also fits into the existing tool chain. Wieland: “With LemonTree.Automation, the model world around Enterprise Architect can be integrated even more completely into the tool chain. For example, the documentation, architecture and specifications are also included and the models can be built into different scenarios (build pipelines).”

The new release LemonTree 3.0 is available now. Arrange a webinar today to get to know the solution and its field of application better. We can help your teams optimise collaboration across the entire supply chain in model-based development and thus complete projects faster.

In this whitepaper, LieberLieber answers the question of how to bring “Continuous Integration” into model-based software development. The tool chain around Enterprise Architect (LemonTree, Git, Pro Cloud Server, Prolaborate) currently provides all the prerequisites to realise this scenario. From our experience, these possibilities are currently unique on the market and they open up completely new possibilities for our customers. Therefore, we want to present to you which procedures of classical software development can be adopted for “continuous modelling” with this tool chain. It will also become clear that working with a central database (Prolaborate) and using LemonTree/Git are not contradictory, but can be used very well in parallel.

This question is becoming increasingly important due to legal regulations, stricter safety regulations and the significant increase in product variants. Therefore, we are responding to a frequently expressed wish and answering the question in this white paper as to whether clean versioning is possible at all when modelling complex cyber-physical systems. To do this, we first look at what constitutes a complex system and why clean release is more difficult today when modelling such systems. Then we turn to practical matters by analysing the versioning process in more detail and describing the resulting requirements for tools.
