Vienna/Gauting-Stockdorf – For Christoph Hinrichs, Global Process Expert “Requirements Engineering, Systems Engineering, MBSE” at Webasto, the future of development clearly lies in MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering): “At Webasto, we started dealing with MBSE about two years ago in order to better meet the challenges of our complex development projects. Before that, we only had isolated solutions with various modelling tools and Enterprise Architect, which did not produce the desired results. Now we were able to show, among other things, in a pilot project in our Business Unit Batteries, which possibilities MBSE opens up for the company. We were very well supported by LieberLieber and are also extremely satisfied with the support around Enterprise Architect and LemonTree.” Hinrichs therefore presented his experiences at the first MBSE Summit in June 2022 in Traunkirchen, Upper Austria, and received a lot of attention from the MBSE community. The summit was organised by LieberLieber and the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz and will take place again in 2023 from 5 to 6 June.

Clear MBSE strategy and thorough testing of the tools

Webasto did not want to leave anything to chance when entering MBSE. Therefore, a clearly structured modelling process was defined (MBSE Meta-Model), the language to be used was defined (SysML) and the appropriate tool was selected in a very elaborate back-to-back comparison. “We were not satisfied with our previous solution and in a very open and selective tool comparison, Enterprise Architect clearly convinced us with the best cost-benefit ratio,” Hinrichs describes. The continuous responsiveness of the LieberLieber team with regard to open questions also left a very positive impression: “Since we always want to have the latest tools in use, we quickly switched to Enterprise Architect 16. LieberLieber supported us very well in this and also updated LemonTree promptly so that we could continue to use the whole tool chain.” In the end, LieberLieber’s recommendations regarding the tool chain were adopted, but Git was replaced by IBM RTC.

Dr Konrad Wieland, Managing Director of LieberLieber, comments: “We are very pleased that Webasto has chosen the path towards MBSE together with us. Christoph Hinrichs is approaching this major task in a very clearly structured way and gave us interesting insights into his pioneering work at the MBSE Summit 2022. We are united by the common goal of communicating the benefits and advantages of MBSE in a comprehensible and practice-oriented way and thus successfully convincing people. In this way, we are creating a good and robust basis for the continued economic success of the outstanding family-owned company Webasto!”

Communicating the benefits of MBSE throughout the company

For Hinrichs, it is clear that the greatest benefit of MBSE only comes when the process has been rolled out throughout the company and is working. This is confirmed by scientific studies and practical experience alike. “As usual, we first launched pilot projects to show what is possible with MBSE and what benefits arise from it. The experience gained is then processed – as in the Business Unit Batteries Department – and shared with the business units. Now we have to scale these experiences and anchor them in the business sections. For this, however, we still have to do a lot of convincing with the support of LieberLieber,” explains Hinrichs.

The most important advantages of MBSE were defined as:

Transparency – recognition of dependencies, Defined starting point for cooperation.

Traceability

Visualisation – common language and the appropriate tool for each case

Reusability and automation – Multiple use of artefacts and models; Automated consistency check of models

Quality – Higher product maturity through semi-automated validation; Fewer errors

Processes – Standardised processes facilitate collaboration; Certifications more quickly attainable

“The faster we integrate these points in the company, the more benefits we can derive from MBSE,” Hinrichs knows. However, it is important not to take any hasty steps, but to first check exactly what the current situation is in a department. Based on this, MBSE can be introduced in a well-controlled process without losing the necessary participation of all those involved by overtaxing them.

MBSE maturity level of a department is assessed in advance

In order to make the introduction of MBSE in other departments as smooth as possible, Hinrichs is developing an ever more detailed maturity model. Currently, there are very few publications and contributions that attempt to support the introduction of MBSE in a systematic and structured way, such as the work of Andreas Vogelsang. “There are studies on the collection of MBSE maturity levels, but no one talks about what effort it takes to reach a level or what benefits can be achieved with a level. In the practical test, for example, we found that the levels have to be as small and solution-oriented as possible so as not to trigger excessive demands, otherwise we would lose interest in MBSE or even meet with resistance. If we want to change something in the processes, methods or tools, we need a team that sticks together and pursues a common goal,” Hinrichs explains.

Key user as communicator for MBSE

As a central point of contact, a “key user” should be found in each department who is available as a multiplier and communicator for MBSE. The fundamental basis for scaling MBSE is the tool setup adapted to the needs as well as the configuration management. Hinrichs supports and disseminates MBSE within the company through internal training. This should help generate enthusiasm for the MBSE initiative at Webasto, establish initial contact and build up a network. If detailed expert knowledge is then required, or if the key user team encounters challenges in the tool, LieberLieber is available for this at any time. “Currently, three pilot projects are running in parallel, one of which is also already at a next higher level in the maturity model. So we are working intensively on establishing and scaling MBSE in the company. There is still a lot of work ahead of us and it is reassuring to know that we can always call in the experts from LieberLieber to solve difficult questions together if necessary,” explains Hinrichs.

Bosch Driving Systems and LieberLieber are currently working together on the implementation of agile working and DevOps concepts in MBSE. The background to this is the challenges in the market for driver assistance systems and automated driving functions. Here, Bosch has set itself the goal in the Driver Experience division of actively shaping the future of these systems on the way to automated and accident-free driving and parking. To this end, various products are being developed in the area of driving and parking, starting with sensors such as ultrasonic sensors and near-range cameras and extending to domain controllers with a large number of cameras, radar sensors and cloud connection for the realisation of complex driving scenarios. In LieberLieber, Bosch has found a competent development partner with outstanding expertise in merging models. This cooperation allows Bosch to concentrate fully on its core competencies. Daniel Siegl, responsible for Business Development at LieberLieber: “Together we are identifying the additional requirements for DevOps, looking for solutions and developing them to deployment maturity. In this way, we want to achieve improvements in software quality, development speed and delivery, while also improving the interaction between the teams involved.”

In order to meet the new requirements, Bosch Driving Systems not only wants to drive forward the technology development in its products, but also design the internal development processes and tools accordingly. The traditional vehicle architecture, in which every sensor and actuator is a fully-fledged control unit with individual logic and corresponding development depth, is today increasingly giving way to new centralised architectures in which the program logic is concentrated in a few central ECUs with corresponding computing power. Several major trends are currently seen in the automotive market that will turn the old, hardware-driven development work upside down. DevOps is a trend that has long been established in classic software areas such as online systems, smartphone apps and desktop applications, but is also already being applied in the automotive sector at Tesla. Due to new cybersecurity requirements and data-driven development approaches, this approach will be necessary on a broad basis in the future. In order to be able to quickly implement the new requirements, many new development cooperations can currently be seen on the market, especially in the area of automated driving. The reason for this is that the effort for development, data collection and validation of the functions is so great that it cannot be managed quickly enough by a single market participant alone.

LieberLieber contributes specific MBSE know-how

In Beer’s department, LieberLieber was involved in piloting the migration of the architecture models to GIT more than two years ago. The experience gained in the process was immediately fed back into the further development of the tool chain. It was learned that many of the architects are not as familiar with the GIT way of working as classical software developers. In order to enable broad acceptance, it is therefore necessary to link the tools in such a way that an architect notices little or nothing of GIT during normal work.

For this purpose, LieberLieber offers the LemonTree plugin in Enterprise Architect, with which the GIT handling can be done directly in the architecture tool. Automation with workflows relieves the user of the need to understand the technical details in review and merge. Scripts and integrations are provided to users to resolve conflicts when merging different model versions. This allows them to concentrate fully on the technical content of the model.

Dr. Konrad Wieland, CEO of LieberLieber: “In order to optimise this automation of the tool chain (pipeline, Continouus Integration, DevOps), we offer with LemonTree.Automation the possibility to integrate the model world around Enterprise Architect even more completely into the tool chain. For example, documentation, architecture and specifications are included and the models can be built into different scenarios (build pipelines).”

For this, a freely available integration option was presented with the presentation of LemonTree 3.3 as a special service for customers together with Florian Beer on Github: https://github.com/LieberLieber/LemonTree.Automation.Workflows/commit/91b08e1560fa00cfad4325e0da490eb63c0ae5e1

Basically, however, each integration must be determined by the respective company so that everything also fits into the existing tool chain.

Whitepaper: Continuous Integration with Enterprise Architect

In this Whitepaper, LieberLieber answers the question of how to bring “Continuous Integration” into model-based software development. In the tool chain around Enterprise Architect (LemonTree, Git, Pro Cloud Server, Prolaborate) you can currently find all the prerequisites to realise this scenario. From our experience, these possibilities are currently unique on the market and they open up completely new possibilities for our customers. Therefore, we want to present to you which procedures of classical software development can be adopted for “continuous modelling” with this tool chain. It will also become clear that working with a central database (Prolaborate) and using LemonTree/Git are not contradictory, but can be used very well in parallel.

As Gollwitzer went on to explain, on the road to becoming an agile company it is necessary to reconcile such complex things as the company roadmap, the business model and cars with different features. In IT architecture in particular, one must always stay on the target path in order not to slip into an architectural erosion. This would result in a disproportionately high effort for continuous readjustment.
Since many versions and variants of models are inevitably created in such an agile and complex environment, it was crucial for the commitment to MBSE to be able to handle them easily and safely.

“The control of all versions and variants of the models created in the development process was the most important requirement for the stable anchoring of MBSE in the company. LieberLieber supported us very well in this with their profound practical knowledge as well as with tools such as Enterprise Architect and LemonTree, thus promoting internal persuasion,” explains Gollwitzer.

New approaches for MBSE in the future

In the concluding question and answer session of the webinar, Daniel Siegl gave a brief outlook on current developments in the MBSE sector. Thus, the current requirements of the industry showed the desire for continuous integration. This refers to the permanent merging of components into one application in order to improve the software quality. At the same time the interest in the NuGet approach in the field of modelling is growing. This refers to a system for distributing software components in packages. Closely related to this is not least the DevOps method, which above all increases the speed of development and improves teamwork.

“LieberLieber is of course also concerned with these new approaches and methods in daily practice. Our product LemonTree in particular already takes up many of the approaches contained in it, which makes it even easier for us to put them into practice. We are therefore already well prepared for the next steps and look forward to further cooperation with VW on the way to an extensive digitalisation!”

Petwalk, the Austrian specialist for automatic dog and cat doors, is on an expansion course. In order to meet the strict safety regulations required for access to the American market, the company sought the support of LieberLieber. Together, they are now developing a model-based solution that demonstrably meets all safety regulations.

Wien/Ternitz – Petwalk Solutions, founded in 2010 as a result of a research project in Ternitz, Lower Austria, specializes in next-generation automatic doors for cats and dogs. And, since pet owners care a great deal about the well-being of their four-legged friends, safety-critical aspects play a major role in Petwalk’s door development process for which proven standards from the automotive industry are being used as criteria for development and testing. Klaus Kindl, founder and managing director: “Our doors are subject to demanding security requirements similar to those that apply, for example, to passenger elevators. We must comply with requirements for both the electronic and mechanical components. We are very export-oriented and already deliver to more than 30 countries worldwide; however, in order to be able to export to more complex legal markets such as the USA, we had to start a re-engineering project.” The need for a model-based approach soon became apparent, which naturally led to contact with LieberLieber. Daniel Siegl, Managing Director of LieberLieber: “Following my presentation at the Austrian Software Industry Association (VÖSI), the project’s objectives soon crystallized during our conversation. Petwalk’s use case makes it particularly important to formally demonstrate compliance with the legal requirements on its software. Model-based development is ideal for this.”

Models document the fulfilment of legal requirements
One big advantage of model-based software and systems development is the fact that compliance with legal requirements can be proven automatically in the model. Since traceability is nowadays mandatory in more and more industries and countries, the use of models is likewise growing in prevalence. Markus Hammer is Managing Director of CertaBit Engineering and fills the role of CTO at Petwalk: “As I have worked with Enterprise Architect in the automotive sector before, I was familiar with the strengths and challenges of this modeling platform. Looking for enhancements I came across LieberLieber’s LemonTree and Embedded Engineer, two powerful solutions that extend the capabilities of Enterprise Architect.” After initial tests and training, Hammer was quickly convinced of the quality of the LieberLieber extensions. “Embedded Engineer allows us to debug directly in the model. We were able to bring the firmware of our hardware suppliers in-house and we now get much faster, error-free and clearly structured code.” Over the course of development the team was confronted with the challenge of versioning and how development cooperation should work. “The ability to block other users had not been implemented into Petwalk’s workflow as we would have liked. LemonTree provides us with an optimal solution that supports us in all versioning issues that occur in a team environment,” explains Hammer. Ultimately, the simultaneous use of Embedded Engineer and LemonTree provides excellent conditions for upcoming development challenges.

Now, connecting the old and the new is no problem.
Because the Petwalk door’s electronics run on embedded Linux and Windows Embedded, the development team decided to clearly separate old and new functions and connect them via an interface. In this way, existing functions can be easily retained while the new ones can be created right away in the modeling tool. LieberLieber’s approach is very pragmatic: You can continue to use existing software and still switch to a model-based approach when it makes sense. This makes it much easier for us to decide on the fly whether or not to take this step. This also allow us to intensify our cooperation with LieberLieber on an ongoing basis, trying out new things over and over again,” says Kindl. Petwalk intends to kick off the year 2018 with a splash in the US market: The first prototypes from the re-engineering project are to be presented in January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Hirschmann Car Communication is a leading German supplier of transmitter and receiver systems. The company has long based its systems development on Enterprise Architect. Now, in a preliminary project for a remote tuner, LieberLieber Embedded Engineer is being used to generate executable source code from their UML system model.

Hirschman Car Communication employs 140 engineers in the areas of industrial engineering, development and design, and measurement and test engineering. Dennis Drews is a software engineer at Hirschmann: “A colleague recommended LieberLieber Embedded Engineer to us, which we thoroughly tested and then presented internally. Today I would say that if you’re using Enterprise Architect, you should also be using LieberLieber products. Embedded Engineer has proved to be a high-quality tool and has faultlessly generated running software from the model.” Developers used LieberLieber’s help website and email support. “We quickly developed the two state machines in C and optimized the model in such detail that we did not have to dive into the automatically-generated code! This is an ideal condition for us, which we were able to achieve thanks to LieberLieber’s excellent tool,” Drews concludes.

“We are very proud to have Hirschmann Car Communication, one of the leading providers in the automotive supplier industry, among our customers. The fact that our Embedded Engineer tool was able to meet the high quality requirements in this project reinforces us in our own drive to meet such high levels of quality. In order to create innovative products one also needs excellent tools, which we are constantly working to improve,” explains Daniel Siegl, CEO at LieberLieber.

Disruptive technology ensures competitive edge
The remote tuner modules are a disruptive technology for Hirschmann Car Communication: They move the receiver technology closer to the antenna from the head unit, thus making an additional amplifier unnecessary. The digital transmission is then no longer via several, expensive co-axial cables, but via a single, cost-effective cable. “As a leading manufacturer, we want to introduce such disruptive technologies as quickly as possible, even if they change the current way of doing business. In our field, technical advancement gives us a key competitive edge that distinguishes us from our competitors. We must always be ready to enter new territory,” explains Thomas Adam, Head of Technology & Innovation.

In order to be able to hold this decisive market advantage, developers are of course glad to support development of the best tools available on the market. At the beginning of the project, when software code requirements were higher than what could directly be achieved with Enterprise Architect, Drews was pleased to learn of LieberLieber Embedded Engineer: “If we want to keep our lead, then we also have to continuously optimize our tools. In addition, our high quality requirements dictate that we must know our tools very well, and also exploit the possibilities within them. It is our desire to live quality in all areas and Embedded Engineer provides excellent support for us in this domain.” The positive experiences from the preliminary design phase have now been passed on to serial production, where the next steps for the production of the remote tuner modules will now be initiated.

LieberLieber Embedded Engineer 2.0 makes embedded software development easy with new features! Generation of C++ source code, the UML Debugger and, totally new, the options of source code synchronisation and requirements tracing.

Vienna, … ..2015 – LieberLieber Embedded Engineer for Enterprise Architect combines automated source code generation with debugging at the model level. For the new release 2.0 the possibilities in terms of generation/debugging of C source code have been fully extended. Quite a new addition is the ability to generate C ++ source code, so now the two main programming languages in embedded development are covered. The two other new features are the UML Debugger and, in practice frequently requested, “Source Code Synchronization”. “Thanks to our ever-expanding partnerships in recent years, we sense an increasing demand for our Embedded Engineer product. With this new release, we are now putting an even more powerful tool in the hands of developers in the embedded environment that has a UML debugger and with which they can more easily and quickly create C and C ++ code, and can at any time can synchronize self-written code with the model,” explains Daniel Siegl, Managing Director at LieberLieber.

Nominated for the eAward 2016!

LieberLieber Embedded Engineer has been developed as a part of the tool chain for developing embedded systems, because only with an integrated solution can the model-driven approaches in the development of embedded software running efficiently. The competence of LieberLieber in embedded systems is underscored by the established in recent years partnerships with Green Hills, Lauterbach, iSystem, PLS and Willert.

UML Debugger: A long-standing problem has been solved
With the UML Debugger, included in Embedded Engineer, LieberLieber has solved a problem which has plagued several generations of code generation tools. Whereby debugging in the early days was only possible on the assembler level, in the recent decades of software development this key step has been performed directly in the programming language. Now, in model-based development we find ourselves in a similar situation: development takes place on the UML model level, then debugging is carried out C or C ++. With the UML Debugger, debugging takes place directly on the model level, which represents a great step in the evolution of model-based development. “Until now, when troubleshooting developers had to change to the generated code from the model. This difficult and time-consuming work is made superfluous by our UML Debugger, and the development process is sped up considerably,” explains Roman Bretz, responsible for product development at LieberLieber.

The UML Debugger consists of a separate project browser, a chart and a source code indicator. So, immediately after the transmission of the generated code to the hardware, the UML Debugger enables code debugging directly in the model. The debugger automatically handles the synchronization of the model with the source code and allows the developer to simultaneously follow execution on both levels.

Code Synchronization: Synchronizing existing and new code
LieberLieber feels that creating an entire application again just to realize a continuous model-based approach is unreasonable and inefficiant. Rather, existing code (e.g. a state machine as an integral part of the model) is to be re-used, while other parts of the software will be developed by utilizing the advantages of UML. Although model-based development brings with it many benefits, in some cases development can sill be carried out faster in the source code editor. The “User Code Synchronization” feature, newly integrated into LieberLieber Embedded Engineer 2.0, provides a powerful way to synchronize new, handwritten code with the model. For this, the tool clearly marks areas in the source code that can be safely edited by the developer at any time.

Development of a solution for optimizing and debugging embedded software at the model level

Vienna/Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn, …… – LieberLieber Software and Lauterbach have joined forces to create a solution for the optimization and debugging of embedded software directly on the model in addition to the source code level. “This cooperation with Lauterbach, the world market leader for hardware-assisted debuggers, further complements our offering in the area of embedded systems development. In response to continually growing demand, this joint solution now enables debugging directly in the UML model itself and thereby more efficient and less time-consuming troubleshooting,” says Daniel Siegl, CEO at LieberLieber Software.

This solution was presented by both companies at the Embedded World Conference, Feb. 24th till 26th, 2015 in Nuremberg, Germany, as a specially-created demo version.

Growing demand now met by an optimized solution
“All of our debugging solutions allow the search for errors down to the source-code level in all popular object-oriented languages. To facilitate debugging in UML-generated source code, we looked for a partner that allows users to debug directly at the model level. With LieberLieber we have found the right company that can refer to extensive experience in solving this challenge. Although the embedded market in terms of model-based debugging is still a bit hesitant, we expect great demand both in Germany and in the US for this compelling solution,” explains Rudi Diensteck of Lauterbach, stressing the importance of the cooperation.

The new solution combines the Lauterbach TRACE32® In-Circuit Debugger product line with the LieberLieber UML Debugger. The TRACE32® has already shipped to 100,000 customers, and supports all common CPU architectures including ARM/Cortex, Intel x86/x64, Power Architecture and many others. The UML Debugger is part of LieberLieber Embedded Engineer for Enterprise Architect, a solution for the model-based development of embedded systems. The graphical debugger is integrated into the Enterprise Architect UML platform by Sparx Systems, used by over 350,000 users worldwide. It allows you to set hardware breakpoints directly in the model and then go through the process step-by-step. The time response of the system being analyzed is not impaired, which is decisive for the debugging of embedded solutions.

“This jointly-created solution allows customers to graphically and efficiently analyze the system for errors, and optimize simultaneously. It gives UML developers the power to ensure that the critical factors of the embedded system are not changed,” says Dienstbeck.

Complete solution for testing and debugging embedded software on the model level

Vienna/Lauta, 25. November, 2014 – In the first week of December, at the Embedded Software Engineering Congress 2014 in Sindelfingen, Germany, LieberLieber Software and PLS Programmierbare Logik & Systeme will present their continuous tool chain for the testing and debugging of embedded software on the model level. Using this new comprehensive solution, developers using Enterprise Architect (EA) to develop model-based embedded software will also be able to test and debug their work directly in the model. Among other benefits, this saves a lot of time when generating C code. Another big advantage is that already-existing code is maintained.

This jointly-developed solution suite from LieberLieber Software and PLS combines the LieberLieber UML Debugger, the first graphical UML debugger integrated into Enterprise Architect (EA), with the Universal Debug Engine (UDE), a development environment for the development and testing of embedded software. The UML debugger is part of the ‘LieberLieber Embedded Engineer’ suite and is based on ‘LieberLieber uml2code’, a code generator for embedded systems. The code generated by a compiler of the customer’s choice can thus be transferred directly to the hardware. Subsequently, the ‘LieberLieber UML Debugger’ is connected to the target system. The integrated visualization module allows testing and debugging of code on the graphical model level.

Both the Code Generator and UML Debugger from LieberLieber Software support class and activity models as well as state machines. The software and hardware tools from PLS are available for different CPU architectures, microcontrollers and compilers. “This unique combination will significantly simplify and accelerate the work of developers who create embedded software on the basis of Unified Modeling Language (UML), especially since it can be implemented straight into already-running projects. With the continuous tool chain, for the first time we enable users to efficiently use model-driven approaches in embedded software development together with already-existing code,” says Daniel Siegl, Managing Director at LieberLieber Software. Roman Bretz, CTO of LieberLieber Software, adds: “The broad range of microcontroller platforms supported by PLS ensures that developers really develop their software model for the desired platform, while testing and debugging can be instantly carried out.”

Thomas Bauch, Managing Director at PLS, underlines the numerous advantages to users of this cooperative venture: “Similar to LieberLieber Software, at PLS we have also seen a clearly growing interest for model-based embedded developments for some time. However, what has been missing up to now in this interesting pioneering market is a suite of optimized solutions for the testing and debugging of software developed for specific hardware at the model level. We open up entirely new opportunities for embedded developers through close cooperation with the Enterprise Architect specialists, which ultimately helps save a great deal of time and money.”

LieberLieber strengthens its partnership with Willert Software Tools to develop a real-time solution for UML code generation

Vienna/Bückeburg, November 27th, 2014 – The cooperation that started in 2011 between the two embedded engineering specialists LieberLieber Software and Willert Software Tools has resulted in an optimized UML-based solution, presented at the Embedded Software Engineering Congress 2014. In view of continually growing requirements, especially in the area of embedded software development, this new solution can help developers to create more complex real-time-critical systems while adhering to appropriate standards. “Built on years of cooperation with Willert, we now offer an efficient Plug&Play solution that will introduce a previously unknown scope of simplicity and speed into new projects. We are also deliberately addressing developers who have not yet been able to gain very much experience in UML and have not taken the step into model-based engineering,“ explains Daniel Siegl, CEO of LieberLieber Software.

This jointly-developed solution package combines “LieberLieber Embedded Engineer” with Willert’s “Embedded UML Framework RXF.” The combination of these two products, based on Enterprise Architect by Sparx Systems, has resulted in a very efficient development environment for model-based development for embedded systems.

Attractive price, high efficiency
For Walter van der Heiden, CTO at Willert, this new solution is also attractive due to its outstanding cost/performance ratio: “We can now offer the market an efficient tool for less than 1,000 euros. At the same time, we were able to reduce the number of implemented solutions while greatly increasing efficiency. That is how users of this new tool can save a lot of time and does not have write any code!“ The Willert Framework serves as the link between the UML and hardware, which also optimizes the configurability and demand for resources. In come cases, the size of the code could be reduced by almost 60% to only a few kB.
